The NJ Affordable Housing Trust Fund (AHTF) is critical to building homes for low and moderate income families-but it's under threat. Governor Murphy's proposed FY2026 budget diverts all AHTF funding, over $150 million-away from housing production. Without this funding, Habitat for Humanity projects will stall, and municipalities will struggle to meet affordable housing goals, and families in need will lose their chance at homeownership.

I am your constituent and a Habitat for Humanity supporter. We all know about the housing crisis in New Jersey, and I’m writing to say, “Don’t raid the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.” This Trust Fund was created to provide much-needed resources to non-profits, like Habitat for Humanity, to produce affordable housing. Gov. Murphy's proposed budget raids the trust fund. You must not let that happen.

I recognize this is a difficult budget cycle – many competing needs… many important ones. However, to create a vibrant economy with well-educated, well-fed, healthy residents who can make the most of public education, employment, or well-deserved retirement, a stable home is fundamental. Habitat for Humanity’s niche is building much-needed starter homes, like those the market rarely provides these days. Every penny of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund must go toward building homes.

Suggestions to divert AHTF resources to other housing uses like down-payment assistance don’t make sense if there are no affordable homes to buy.

Please fully fund the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
